There are currently three ways a dog can "graduate" from guide dog school.
Working Guidess - After 6 months or more of formal training, the dog is matched with a visually impaired partner. Up to 4 more weeks of training is done together on campus before the new team is presented at a graduation ceremony. Often times the puppy raiser has the opportunity to attend graduation and meet the new partner.
Breeder Dogs - After returning for formal training, those dogs still under breeder consideration are carefully observed by the trainers and the breeding department. Only the most exceptional dogs are chosen to join the breeding colony. These dogs are also presented at a graduation ceremony and will live with a foster family in between litters of puppies.
K-9 Buddies - This is a new program that matches a suitable dog with a blind child to provide companionship, increased social opportunities, love, and experience caring for a dog. If the child later chooses to be matched with a guide dog, he or she will already have experience with dogs.
Dogs not selected for one of these three jobs are said to be career changed. Career changed dogs go on to work as therapy, search and rescue, diabetic detection, hearing, or of course they can be pet dogs! Check out Boulder's wonderful career change dogs!
Delsey is a female golden retriever. She was born on 8/5/2013 to dog mom Fresca and dog dad Magellan. Delsey is being raised by JulieMarie. Delsey's littermate, Delight, is also in the Boulder club.
Delsey is the second puppy to our club with the name Delsey, and the second puppy named Delsey raised by JulieMarie.
Delsey was recalled on October 18, 2014.
Kenneth graduated as a working guide. He was raised by Lauren.
Jonas graduated as a working guide. He was raised by Cathy.
Poem graduated as a working guide. Poem was raised by Tashai and Robert.
Ray graduated as a working guide. Ray was raised by Lauren.
Kessler graduated as a working guide. Kessler was raised by Aaron.
Jaunty was a female, yellow labrador born on February 14, 1999 to dog dad Guthrie and dog mom Constance. She was raised by Robert and Tashai.
Haiku graduated as a working guide. Haiku was raised by Karen.
Velma was raised by Jane and Gene and she graduated as a working guide.
Plato graduated as a working guide. Plato was raised by Jane and Gene.
Maime was raised by Jane and family. After she retired, she went back to live with her puppy raisers again. Maime graduated as a working guide.
Fergus graduated as a working guide. He was raised by Claire.
Ynez graduated as a working guide. She was raised by Mike.
Sawyer was a male, yellow labrador born on December 15, 1996. He was raised by Lauren.
Volt transferred into the club on April 11, 2014. He is being raised by Kirsten. He is a male, black labrador. Volt is a littermate of Vickram, also being raised in the club. Volt was born on March 5, 2013 to dog dad Jolt and dog mom Hestia.
Volt graduated as a guide in October 2014.
Pickels is a male, yellow labrador born on August 7, 2015 to dog dad Solo and dog mom Peeka. Pickels was started by Joanne, Annabelle, Dan, and Griffin, but is being finished by Jo-Ann B. (Pickels and Shore share a birthday, but they are not related.)
Pickels graduated on March 11, 2017.
